Monday, October 2th, 2023 – Déjà vu all over
again.
Seriously, it was déjà vu all over again. But first a trip down other memory lanes to
Mount Vernon, home of POTUS 1.
It was cool.
The big G owned 8000 acres and 300 people to help him farm it. The “Mansion” was originally a small house built
by his father, but Georgie-boy expanded it when he married and had a gaggle of
kids thrust upon him. (Martha had been
married before and had two kids.)
Shawn and I discussed it and decided as the Big G
and Martha didn’t have any offspring together theirs may have been a marriage
of convenience. She needed a husband and
he needed someone to oversee the running of the house and staff. It apparently worked out for the both of them
to the tune of over 40 years.
Mount Vernon is HUGE compared to how I remember
it from my last trip there 65 years ago.
We spent four hours and could have spent four more seeing all the parts
and buildings we didn’t get to. We also
had a fantastic lunch at the very-very- fancy-dancy-supper-posh-posh restaurant.
Interestingly we didn’t order meals but
had four appetizers. Hoe Cakes, which
were thin pancakes infused with maple sugar, fried green tomatoes, pork
sliders, and Ahi-ahi on toast with a fantastic fruit relish. After that we topped it all off with bread
pudding, vanilla ice cream and coffees. Sound weird, but it was oh-so-good.
But, enough of that. Let’s speak of déjà vu.
We left George’s place and headed south. Made it as far as Staunton, VA and found an
open spot at the Walnut Hills RV Campground.
It’s nice enough, and rather large, and is built into a huge hill with
several layers of ascending roads with camp spots cut into each of them. As I drove the rig up a particularly steep
short section and made a really sharp right turn at the apex my mind did a, “wot
the.. . .!!!” It all came back to me! This was the spot where I dragged the back
end of the trailer carrying the Smart Car behind our first, Class A rig. I’ve been here before! That was 2015 and we had been to a Norton
Rally and a visit to my Bro’s and family.
Serendipity? Whatever. It sounds silly in the telling, but it was a
cool moment.
So, here we sit.
End of day. Did a four-hour house
tour about 150 miles. I’m tired.
See you on the flip side.
Rusty Pistons.
