Tuesday, October 10, 2023 – Thinking of Dad…..
So, earlier today I was motorizing West on good
old Interstate 40, and I saw in my sideview a commercial bus coming up behind
me in the left lane and obviously going to pass me. I was pretty sure it was a
Trailways, or Big Dog, or some other travel bus because it had a flat top. That’s noticeable because big bus style RV
usually have Air Conditioners mounted on their roofs.
So (again), I suddenly wondered where do the commercial
busses have their air conditioners installed.
Down under the bus in a big bay I assume. And then I thought, “Dad would know! I will ask him.” And then I remember Dad passed away about 12
or 14 years ago. So (again), I guess I
won’t be askin’ the old man, but I sure do be missing and rememberin’ him. It hurts less, but it never stops.
Tonight, we are in a very nice KOA that offers
gor-met meals delivered to your rig. I’m
ordering a Full Roast Turkey Dinner with peach pie -la-mode, and Shawn is
ordering a “Light Smoked Beef Plate” with corn bread and green beans, and a “Fruits
of the Forrest” pie a-la-mode.
We did 253 miles today. That’s a good day. Fifty more miles would have been gooder, but the
RV camp dearth suggested we stop a bit early.
I’ve noticed a few interesting linguistics in
some of the highway signs. Some say, “Bridges
Ice Before Roadways”, some say, “Bridge Ices Before Roadway”, and the occasional
one says, “Icy Bridge.” That last one
was accompanied by another sign that said, “Strong Crosswinds May Occur.” I ‘spect those two last signs in conjunction would
give you something to think about when it’s cold/snowy.” For me, now in this nice warm weather, all they make think about is that sign makers need to retake English 101.
By the way, do you know what they call Virga that
reaches the ground? Rain.
I’m currently re-reading Jean Auel’s “Clan of the
Cave Bear” and in it she describes, “Hearth Etiquette”, such as “Don’t walk
thru other people’s hearth, don’t look into other people’s hearth, don’t look
at other people when they are in their hearth, don’t violate other people’s privacy,
even in a no-walls environment. And I
realized all those hold true for staying in RV parks. Eyes down, straight ahead, do not acknowledge
other people unless they acknowledge you first.
That last bit is really hard for me as I just love to say “Hi” to fellow
RVer's. Anyway, nothing has seemed to
have changed much in 50 million years.
On the other hand, my “Air Force” cap has let me
meet several other Airmen, a couple of Marines, a Swabby, and a GI or two. There is a brotherhood out there and I’m
proud to be part of it.
See you on the flip,
Rusty Pistons
